Cork and the Wine Industry

, Posted in: Uncategorized,

We previously wrote about Cork and Cork trees and why Cork must be harvested humanely for the large range of animals and other species which depend on cork forrests for their survival.

A wine of the month club we belong to will only ship wines which are sealed with natural cork.  Their reasons are partly environmental to be sure, but also partly economic because the cork industry is doing an incredible job marketing itself to wine drinkers.  Despite the facts that artificial cork seals better over the short term (think 2 years or less) and 98% of wine is consumed in that time period and screw tops are favored by bartenders for easy and accessibility….any high end wine business is going to be dealing almost exclusively in cork.
